Red Bull Flugtag Soaring into Regatta August 5
For Immediate Release
Pittsburgh, PA, February 13, 2017 – This year’s EQT Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta will reach new heights when Red Bull Flugtag, the world’s wildest homemade human-powered flying craft competition, makes its Pittsburgh debut during the three-day, action-packed, water, land and air festival.
“The EQT Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. What better way to honor that milestone than to partner with Red Bull to bring this one-of-a-kind event to Pittsburgh for the first time,” said Derek Weber, President, LionHeart Event Group, the event management company that produces the EQT Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta, which will be held August 4-6, 2017.
Red Bull Flugtag, which means Flying Day in German, is a free, family-friendly event, where teams of five build homemade flying machines and then send them off a 22-foot high flight deck to see which craft can fly the farthest. Flying machines range from realistic plane replicas to anything the imagination can conjure up. Past crafts include winged beasts, modern oddities, fantastic blasts from the past and food we’d all like to see fly,
“Pittsburgh is known as the City of Champions, and we can’t wait to see the creative, unique flying machines Pittsburghers think up to help our city make this Flugtag one for the record books,” said Weber, “It’s going to be a sight our city and the regatta have never seen.”
Applying to participate in Red Bull Flugtag starts today and is free. Wannabe pilots and participants must be 18 years or older. The deadline to submit craft designs is May 1, 2017. For more information, including applications, rules, photos and video footage from past Red Bull Flugtag events, visit www.RedBullFlugtag.com.
Applications will be reviewed and teams will be selected by May 8, 2017. On Saturday, August 5, 2017, competitors will take the plunge off the flight deck in front of thousands of roaring fans as they attempt to break the 258-foot world record.
The EQT Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta Turns 40
For four decades, the EQT Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta, which is the largest inland regatta in the nation and the tristate region’s largest summer event, has been giving local families, residents and boating enthusiasts an array of memories that will last a lifetime. Each year, more than half a million attendees enjoy the activities located around our city’s three rivers, including Point State Park, the North Shore great lawn and the Roberto Clemente Bridge.
“As the title sponsor of the Regatta, EQT is proud to provide the region with an annual tradition that takes advantage of everything Pittsburgh, and its rivers, have to offer,” said Natalie Cox, Corporate Director, Communications, EQT Corporation. “The regatta is where our community comes to celebrate the city we call home and the waterfront we love.”
In addition to Red Bull Flugtag, this year’s EQT Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta will offer an array of national music acts, boating activities, food and family fun. “We have big plans for this year’s anniversary celebration,” said John R. Bonassi, Chairman, Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta Inc., Board of Directors. “From the exciting Formula One Powerboat races to the 90-foot ‘Wheel of Lights’ Ferris wheel to regatta favorites like the Anything that Floats race, no matter your age or interest, there will be an activity for you at this year’s event.”
